Creative development in the fashion industry

Whether a student's passion is for footwear design, make-up for film, fashion buying or styling for photographic shoots, the philosophy of all our courses is to offer creative development alongside a strong vocational slant. The expertise of our highly experienced industry professionals ensures that students are kept aware of changing demands and opportunities within the fashion industry. Many of our tutors combine teaching with careers within the industry. This allows them to pass on invaluable 'insider' knowledge to students, on the latest technologies, techniques and trends. 2. Camberwell College of Arts

Camberwell is one of the world’s foremost art and design institutions and we’ve welcomed students to South London for over a century, many of whom have stayed on in the area making it the place for artists to live and work.

In that time we’ve carved out a name for high quality teaching by leading practitioners - teaching that has put artists and designers on the road to international prominence and many others on the path to fulfilment in their chosen practice.

Students and visitors notice that Camberwell has a strong set of values - of equality and fairness, of respect and tolerance, a strong sense of place and connectedness with the world around us and a lively sense of enquiry and curiosity. We will open up new possibilities for you so that you can explore ground breaking and adventurous ideas.

Coming to art college is an important step to take - it should be an adventure that enriches you for the rest of you life. We aim to make that happen! You will find it challenging at Camberwell, but never daunting.

3. London College of Communication

Formerly London College of Printing, LCC is the largest constituent College of the University of the Arts London and our students automatically become members of Europe's largest university dedicated to art, communication, design and related technologies.

University status was awarded following our long run of outstanding evaluations of teaching quality, and our sector-leading research performance.

The College has around 9,000 students, of all ages and from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. This is a diversity which adds to the unique feel of this special and specialist College. Our staff include successful practitioners in London's thriving design, photography, broadcasting, publishing, advertising, film, printing, retailing and media industries.

The London College of Communication is more single minded than a large, multi-faculty university. All students share our passion for the communication of ideas and images and the distribution of products and images.

As well as being enthusiastic about our subjects and our courses, we are also proud of our London base. The College is located in a central yet affordable area of London. We list the London Eye, the Southbank Film, Art and Theatre Complex, and the Tate Modern amongst our near neighbours, yet we are close to some of the University's best halls of residence, and some excellent private student accommodation.

Welcome to Chelsea

Welcome to the Chelsea website - which highlights and explains the range of courses, activities and expertise in the College's portfolio. It also gives you a glimpse of the opportunities that studying here may open up for you.

As you explore the site, you will find out about the wide range of courses, research activities, shows and other events that happen at Chelsea through the year. Broadly speaking, Chelsea's interests and expertise lie in the following areas of contemporary practice:

  • fine art (new digital media, painting, sculpture, installation, performance, work for galleries and for specific sites);
  • graphic design communication (a contemporary approach to graphics, including interactive web design);
  • interior and spatial design (new architectural concepts, furniture and installations re-defining living spaces, refurbishment of existing buildings);
  • textile design (for fashion, furnishings and new functional and environmental applications);
    and
  • research into the history and theory of visual and multimedia cultures (modernity, identity, materiality, the production and status of the arts, cultures of collecting, consumption of style, performativity, narratives of space and place, environmental and ethical agendas of making art and design).

You will also discover Chelsea through the successes of its students and staff - not only as acclaimed designers and artists, but creative individuals who are making a difference in other walks of life - whether as teachers, writers, performers or entrepreneurs.

Chelsea has a very powerful history on which its international reputation is built. The professional practice and research activities of the staff feed into all aspects of the challenging and inspiring programmes. It's all about talent, and the diversity of ideas and attitudes among students as well as staff. The College is very people oriented, friendly and inclusive. Learning happens through interaction - with your peer group, tutors, and external partners from the arts, industry, the media and the community.

A student centred approach to learning, and our location in the creative capital of the world, characterise all the courses on offer. Chelsea's friendliness and strong sense of community are enhanced by being located on a single campus at Millbank.

We enjoy the energising possibilities offered by our neighbour, Tate Britain, and the proximity of the Thames offers an enormously encouraging metaphor for change and flow. Art schools are restless places driven by questions and challenges, and I believe their restlessness is healthy, even essential. They are also purposefully informal, which means that students and staff work closely together without the barriers found in traditional academic structures. We know that these are the organisational characteristics that contribute to the creative culture that is 'Chelsea'.

We hope you find the information and inspiration that you require from the Chelsea website, but for a greater taste of what life is like at the College please come and visit us at one of our open days or summer degree shows, we look forward to welcoming you.

Introduction to the College

The academic provision of Wimbledon College of Art is divided into three academic schools - School of Foundation Studies, School of Fine Art and School of Theatre. These deliver a suite of specialist art and design courses ranging from pre-foundation and foundation to undergraduate and postgraduate, as well as providing research supervision for students undertaking a research programme of study.

Based at Palmerston Road, the School of Foundation Studies provides a wide range of learning opportunities for anyone interested in starting an art and design education. Modes of study include short courses, evenings and Saturdays, summer courses and full and part-time foundation study. The programmes offered enable students to develop their skills and knowledge so that they can successfully progress to further study and, ultimately, careers in the creative industries. All courses are taught by practicing artists and designers who use their professional experience to inform the curriculum. Students are able to realise their work to a high level and are supported in this by a dedicated, highly skilled and helpful technical team. Advice, guidance events and open days are run during the year to assist in course selection.

Located on the Merton Hall Road, the School of Fine Art provides excellent learning opportunities through the provision of dedicated specialist undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in painting, sculpture, print and digital media and time-based media. We have dedicated workshop facilities and technical staff to support you in your studies. All staff working on the programmes are active practitioners and/or researchers, and students are introduced to the relationship of the studio disciplines to research and professional practice throughout the curriculum. There is a strong emphasis on drawing within the programmes, and students are encouraged to gain knowledge and professional experience through a range of projects, which include working on the Jerwood Drawing Prize, organised and hosted by the College. The opportunity for progression, from undergraduate to postgraduate and from postgraduate to research degree study exists within the School and where appropriate this is encouraged and facilitated.

Also based at the Merton Hall Road, the School of Theatre is the largest centre in the UK offering undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in design and related studies for stage, screen, costume and special effects. On campus is a professionally equipped theatre, as well as an excellent range of workshops and costume studios. The School of Theatre encourages student collaborations across all disciplines, including joint projects with the School of Fine Art. Technical and teaching staff, active within the professional theatre, film and television worlds, bring a wide range of expertise to their students. Both the schools of Fine Art and Theatre Design actively seek education and work experience opportunities for their students, either through contact with the local community, related professional companies or other institutions and business organisations.
